Wi-Fi connection issues

If you are having problems connecting or staying connected to wireless internet on your Sonim XP8, there are some steps you can try to troubleshoot  the issue.

We can categorize Wi-Fi issues as following (Scroll down the page to find respective troubleshooting steps) :

  1. Unable to locate Wi-Fi network
  2. Unable to connect to Wi-Fi network
  3. Not being able to turn on Wi-Fi from Settings
  4. Connected but internet not working

Unable to Locate Wi-Fi Network :

Depending on the router configuration, it may or may not be broadcasting the SSID (Network Name). If the router is not broadcasting then the WiFi name would not appear in the list of Wi-Fi networks on your phone. In that scenerio you should be aware of your network SSID, security type, password and advanced settings(if any). To add a network, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Tap on three dots at right top > Choose Add network. Enter all the details and click on Save. Once saved you will be able to connect to this Wi-Fi network.

If the network is not the hidden one, then once Wi-Fi is turned on, device automatically starts searching for the available Wi-Fi networks in range. If you are within the range of your Wi-Fi Router/ Access point and the device is still not listing the network name under the Settings > WLAN, wait for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and then try following :

  1. Check to see if you are able to see your Wi-Fi network name from any other device/ computer, if not try switching off the router and turning it back on and contact your router manufacturer/ ISP  for troubleshooting.
  2. If your Wi-Fi name is visible on other devices, then on Sonim XP8, while you are under Settings > Wi-Fi, Tap on the three dots at right top and tap on refresh.
  3. Try turning Wi-Fi Off and then back On
  4. Restart the device
  5. If possible check to see if your device lists other Wi-Fi networks and whether or not its able to connect to them(if possible)
  6. Contact Sonim Technical Support.

Unable to connect to Wi-Fi network :

If you can see your Wi-Fi name(SSID) listed under available Wi-Fi networks but you are not able to connect to it, try following :

  1. Seemingly obvious, but make sure you are choosing the right network name. Although rare but sometimes the list shows the similar names, especially if its a work network.
  2. Check to see if you are entering the correct password. For accuracy you can enable 'Show Password' field right below the password input field after you select a Wi-Fi network from the list.
  3. If you are certain that you are trying to connect to the right Wi-Fi network with correct password but still unable to connect, try restarting the device and then the Wi-Fi router/access point(if possible). If it is a work network check with IT administrator whether additional settings are needed to connect to the targeted network. Additional settings are available under Settings > Wi-Fi > Tap on Wi-Fi network name > Choose Advanced options.
  4. If issue continues please contact Sonim Technical Support.

Not being able to turn On Wi-Fi from Settings :

If you cannot get the Wi-Fi to turn On or it is greyed out, it could most likely be an hardware issue with the device. To make sure of this try following :

  1. Try closing all applications and launching Settings again.
  2. Reboot the device
  3. Backup your data and perform factory reset
  4. Contact Sonim Technical Support

Connected but internet not working :

In some cases when you finish setting up your Wi-Fi on the device, you might not be able to browse or use internet. In this scenerio try following steps to troubleshoot :

  1. Check to see if you are able to access internet on other device's which are connected to same Wi-Fi network. Also you can check for the Router lights(if any) and make sure internet/data light is green/blue and is not amber or completely off.
  2. If above(1) is not the case, try switching Wi-Fi Off and back On, let the device connect to the Wi-Fi automatically
  3. Not resolved? Try forgetting the Wi-Fi network, go to Settings > Wi-Fi > Choose 'Wi-Fi Name' > Choose Forget, and try reconnecting and see if issue is fixed.

If issue is still not resolved and you are certain that network is not the cause (which you can verify by testing the network on other devices), please contact Sonim Technical Support.

Bluetooth connection problems

Any issue wherein you are not able to use your XP8 bluetooth functionality effectively with other devices will be discussed here with possible solutions.

Bluetooth connectivity issues can be divided further into following categories :

(1) Accessory/ Device not visible under the listed devices.

(2) Unable to connect to a device

(3) Audio device connected but not functioning as expected

We will explore each type one by one :

(1) Accessory/ Device not visible under the listed devices

At this point you would need to check what type of device you want to connect to.

Bluetooth Accessories (Stereo headsets/ Car kits etc) : To connect these type of devices, first step is to ensure that the accessory is in pairing mode(also known as discoverable mode). If the accessory is not in pairing mode, it would not be open for a new connection. To check on how to put the device in pairing mode refer to the user manual of the respective accessory.

Other mobile devices : If the device you are trying to pair with your Sonim XP8 is another mobile device and you do not see it listed in the available devices under bluetooth, it means the other device might not be in discoverable mode. Check to see if the other mobile device has been set to discoverable mode. Some mobile devices allowed the discoverable time to be 2 minutes after which it switches back to non-discoverable mode again, check to make sure that is not the case.

If issue continues contact Sonim Support.

(2) Unable to connect to the device

For this case as well you would need to check what type of device you are trying to connect to :

Bluetooth Accessories (Stereo headsets/ Car kits etc) : If you are having trouble connecting to the target accessory:

  1. Try switching off Bluetooth on both the devices(Phone & the accessory) and start pairing afresh.
  2. If the issue continues, check to see if the accessory is connected to any other mobile device.
  3. If not, try restarting both the devices (phone & the accessory)
  4. Still not resolved? Try deleting the existing paired items saved on device from before :  You can do that by going to Settings > Bluetooth > Choose the Accessory/Phone name from the list > Choose Forget. (Please note: Forgetting a device means you would have to pair those devices from the beginning again whenever you want to use them)
  5. If issue continues, contact Sonim Support.

Other mobile devices :  If you are trying to pair a mobile to your Sonim XP8, make sure you select pair on both devices after tapping on the bluetooth device name in the list. This pair button would actually appear with a pairing code and would seek aknowledgement from both parties to start pairing only if the code matches. If the pairing message/dialogue does not appear on any one or either of the devices, try following :

  1. Try switching of Bluetooth on both the devices(Phone & the accessory) and start pairing afresh.
  2. If the issue continues, check to see if the other mobile is connected to any other mobile device/accessory.
  3. Not resolved ? Restart both the devices and try connecting again.
  4. If it is still not connecting, try deleting the existing paired items saved on both devices from before :  You can do that by going to Settings > Bluetooth > Choose the Accessory/Phone name from the list > Choose Forget. (Please note: Forgetting a device means you would have to pair with those devices from the beginning again.)

If issue continues, contact Sonim Support.

(3) Devices connected but not functioning as expected

This issue would likely be related to inappropriate data transmission or no results from the connection of the devices. Ideal approach here is to first restart the accessory & the phone.

  1. If issue continues you can forget the accessory/device from the Sonim XP8 bluetooth settings as directed earlier and try connecting again.
  2. Next step is to rule out the possibility of the accessory being at fault, to do that just pair accessory with another mobile device and observe the behavior. If behavior remains the same accessory is at fault, if it works with other device, then please contact Sonim Support for help.
